Ciego de Avila

Cuba tourism Ciego de Avila

Tourism: Beach | Diving | Relax |

Ciego de Ávila lies between the Atlantic Ocean and Caribbean Sea. It’s the narrowest province in Cuba and home to the world-famous beaches at Jardines del Rey (most notably on Cayo Coco and Cayo Guillermo). This is where to go if you’re looking for an idyllic beachside vacation.

Accommodation offers Ciego de Avila

tourist accommodation Ciego de Avila Cuba

Accommodation in Ciego de Ávila varies depending on the location. In the capital, many visitors choose Hotel Ciego de Ávila - a modern four-story hotel. You can also stay in one of Ciego de Ávila’s casas particulares - a great way to get to know the locals.

There are plenty of top-end hotels in Cayo Coco, "Hotel Tryp Cayo Coco" for example. Budget accommodation can also be found, including camping at Campismo Cayo Coco. Finding a casa particulare or casa de renta on the islands might not be so easy, however.

Ciego de Avila - what to see

Ciego de Ávila town itself is one of the least touristy in all of Cuba. Few foreigners stop here so it’s a good place to visit if you want a local perspective on Cuban life. Although it has no famous colonial buildings or natural wonders, the town does have its charms.

Places to visit in Ciego de Avila

The small town of Moron is located in the north of the city of Ciego de Avila. Very close to Morón are located some very interesting spots for fishermen and hunters.

The "Laguna de la Leche" is Cuba's largest natural freshwater lake and a perfect place to fish.
Hunters find their place in the "Reserva de Aguachales de Falla".

Apart a private room - casa particular in Moron is a good basis for an excursion to the paradisiacal keys of "Cayo Coco" & "Cayo Guillermo" (much cheaper then a hotel in Cayo Coco).

With a wide range of accommodation, from top-end hotels to casas particulares, along with exquisite beaches, amazing diving, a perfect climate and a lush green interior, Ciego de Ávila Province has something for everyone.

Province Ciego de Ávila

Cuba Beach: Ciego de Ávila

Ciego de Ávila’s real claim to fame has to be its coral keys located off the northern coast. These islands, known as Los Jardines de Rey or “The Kings Gardens” are truly spectacular. Cayo Coco and Cayo Guillermo are the most visited.

  • Cayo Coco

On Cayo Coco, you’ll find plenty of hotels along with miles and miles of blinding white sandy beaches and even an international airport. It’s linked to the mainland by a 27 km causeway. Inland, Cayo Coco is covered with thick jungles and swampy mangroves to the south. Both above and below the water Cayo Coco is home to a teaming variety of colorful wildlife.

Cayo Coco’s pristine beaches run all the way along the north coast, almost in one continuous strip. Although it’s a popular tourist spot, you’ll always be able to find a nearby stretch of isolated paradise for yourself. With its clear waters and wide sandy beach, Playa Flamencos is a good spot for both swimming and horse riding. La Juala is a haven of peace and tranquility, as is Playa Prohibida.

  • Cayo Guillermo

To the west is Cayo Guillermo, a much smaller island. The diving here is world class and so is the fishing.

Playa Pilar (perhaps the nicest beach of all) is located on Cayo Guillermo. It’s named after Hemingway’s boat, “Pilar”. With no hotels and hardly any tourists, it remains completely untouched. It’s backed up by sand dunes that stretch up to 15 meters.

  • Jardines de la Reina

To the south of Ciego de Ávila, you’ll find Jardines de la Reina or “Gardens of the Queen”. This small archipelago offers some excellent fishing opportunities. Expect to come across everything from bonefish and groupers to Caribbean conches and whale sharks. Needless to say, it’s also a very popular scuba and freediving spot.
